This is one of the finest examples of this type of wood you will ever see. This species is commonly known as Box Elder, and when infested with beetles, will release a chemical as a natural antibody to drive out the infestation and this chemical will turn red inside the wood creating what is also called “flame box elder”. This wood is highly prized by wood turners. To preserve the red “flame” these pieces should not be placed in direct sunlight. We use a UV resistant epoxy resin finish, inside and out, to lock in the color for many years to come.
