Silvery Maple is one of my favorite species to work with due to the warm amber tones and the manner in which this species spalts. Spalting is part of the decay process that happens most often when the tree is already on the ground and has been colonized by devouring fungal colonies that will return a tree to the dirt from which it came in just a few years. The Black lines you see in this piece is called zone line spalting. Ask me for more information about this interesting process.
