#160 Ash Leaf Maple (Box Elder)
#160 Ash Leaf Maple (Box Elder)
4.5” diameter and 6.5” tall
Commonly known as Box elder, this wood species produces some of the most beautiful lathe turned pieces available. This tree is commonly found along creek banks or low lying areas as this tree needs the extra moisture provided by these environments. This tree is known for the brilliant red and pink colors produced by the tree whenever it is in some distress due to insect infestation. This particular form has a fantastic shape and nice grain features. This species should be kept out of direct sunlight so that the red colors remain true. This piece has areas with a dark fill applied where insects had created voids left by their devouring work. I always love saving pieces that would have ceased to exist after a few more months of decay.
