This species is a leguminous tree similar to the Mimosa, or Persian Silk Tree. The wood, is also similar, with the Tamarind typically being darker, with a more reddish brown appearance. Leguminous means that the tree produces a “pod” fruit, similar to peanuts, or even certain beans. But the pod has a pulp as well that is either sweet or sour, with the majority of sweet types growing in Thailand. The sour type originate in tropical Africa but have also naturalized in India. Due to the tropical climate of south Florida, this species grows heartily in that environment as well and is where the wood for this vessel came from.
