The markings in some species of maple is created by an absolutely fascinating process. Beetles, known as ambrosia beetles, have a symbiotic relationship with fungal colonies that tenaciously hold onto the legs of the beetle as they tunnel through the wood of certain maple trees. These fungal colonies take up residence in the tunnels, and in so doing, impart stains creating a feature in the wood that is simply one of the coolest things I ever see as a woodworker. You see this feature in the starburst pattern radiating out from the center of the tree, which in this piece, is seen from the side.
