While many people are not familiar with Hackberry trees, they are very common in the eastern United States. They look very similar to beech trees and the spalting patterns in this species has made it one of my favorite woods to work with. Spalting is part of the decay process and builds a lot of extra visual interest into many of the pieces I work with. All of the black lines you see in this piece are called “zone line” spalting. This piece has found inclusion into my Black Series due to its perfection of shape, and finish, as well as the very unique wood characteristics.
